Story of the Wedding of Maharaja Biswasinha of Koch Dynasty

Victor Jubilee Palace of India :The Cooch Behar Palace

Things you don’t know about the Palace:

Victor Jubilee Palace :The Cooch Behar Palace

The huge Cooch Behar Palace was built in 1887 A.D by the famous Koch King Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, embodying the ideology of European architecture that preceded the Italian Renaissance. Built on a 1.50 m high foundation, the two-storey brick-building has an area of 46.5 sqm (initially it had a three-story structure which was damaged by a severe earthquake in 1897 and was renovated). It is 120 meters wide from north to south and 90 meters wide from east to west.

The face of the palace is decorated with a sequence of single and double Corinthian pillars. In the centre of the palace is a long veranda or main entrance which extends inside the palace through the Durbar Hall (courtroom), modelled on St. Peter’s Church in Rome, are four arched arches.

Its dome has twelve angles and, on the top, there is a window. The interior of the ornate dome is rich in exquisite ornaments of small chambers. Below is a curved veranda and twelve windows. In the centre of the courtroom is the sign of sun and majesty emblazoned with coloured marble. Small peaks on either side of the main dome enhance the overall beauty of the palace.

Inside of the Courtroom

Among the rooms in various parts of the palace as a testimony to the past glory are the various bedrooms, checkrooms, bathrooms, sitting rooms, billiard play rooms, kitchens, dining halls, dance halls, libraries, taverns and zenana. The walls of some rooms and the lower part of the roof are rich in ornaments.

Why one should visit this palace:

There is a connection between the east and west in this palace. Built in imitation of Buckingham Palace of England, is one of the most remarkable architecture of India. The Buckingham Palace is the sign of British imperial royalty and mark of empire. India’s own Buckingham Palace is the Cooch Behar Palace which stands as a witness to our country’s bejeweled history.

Backyard of Rajbari

It was modelled after England’s iconic Buckingham Palace by the king of Cooch Behar. It’s not just our generation who idolize the west, the Koch kings were clearly impressed by their style and “Victor Jubilee Palace” (Cooch Behar Palace) is a fine example of it.

Garden View from the balcony

Those who come to this royal city of Cooch Behar, never leave without visiting the famous palace. This place is best for quality time spend with your love ones. The garden of the palace is just marvellous. One can enjoy the aesthetic beauty of the seasonal flowers in the garden. In the north side of the palace there is a Rajbari Park and in the south, famous Rajbari Stadium. Last but not the least, there is a huge “Sinha Duwar” (entrance gate) in the front of the palace which is the witness of Koch Dynasty.
