COOCH BEHAR MERGER AGREEMENT:

          It was the birth of independent India after two decades of colonial rule of British. Question arose regarding which nation the state of Cooch Behar will cede to. On the 28th August 1949 an agreement was contracted between the Governor-general of India and his Highness Maharaja of Cooch Behar, which came to be known as Cooch Behar Merger Agreement.
         And from September 12th 1949 Cooch Behar came under the complete control of India. After that Cooch Behar is recognized as a Union Territory of India.

TRANSFORMATION INTO DISTRICT COOCH BEHAR:

           Cooch Behar became a district of West Bengal (WB) on 1st January 1950. According to the section 29 (A) of 1905 of govt of India it became a part of WB.

BRIEF PROFILE ABOUT COOCH BEHAR:

      The district is in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas at 26°22′N 89°29′E. Cooch Behar is the only planned city in North Bengal region with remnants of royal heritage. Being one of the main tourist destinations of West Bengal, housing the Cooch Behar Palace and Madan Mohan Temple, it has been declared as the heritage city.

   Cooch Behar Palace, also called the Victor Jubilee Palace, is a landmark in Cooch Behar city, West Bengal. It was modeled after the Buckingham Palace in London in 1887 A.D., during the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan.

     Cooch Behar Palace in Cooch Behar was originally designed by Koch King Maharaja Nripendra Narayan.  Now the palace property is owned by ‘The Mantris’. One can say the majestic building is a masterpiece of brilliant architecture exhibiting the rich display of regal era.

Majorly known for its leftovers of royal heritage, Cooch Behar is one of the important destinations to visit in the Indian state of West Bengal. The most important place of interest in Cooch Behar is the Cooch Behar Palace which boasts of remarkable architecture similar to that of Buckingham Palace . Also it's famous for the historical Sagar Dighi & other waterbodies, Madan Mohan Temple, Jenkins School, Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal College formerly known as Victoria College, Baneswar Shiv Temple and other heritage buildings of the district.
